Ratchet is a Lombax; an alien race that seems to have disappeared from the universe a long time ago. While Ratchet has always had a primary goal of saving the galaxy, finding his roots was in the back of his mind, most prominently in his most recent installment “Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction”. On his home planet of Veldin, the Lombax takes up building a spaceship as a hobby. Later on in the series, we discover Ratchet is an extremely skilled mechanic, fixing or attaching most things with a mere couple seconds using his trusty wrench, the “Omniwrench 8000.” The wrench is not only a tool, however, but also a weapon. Ratchet's most basic melee ability is to swing and slam the wrench, destroying some enemies in one hit.
In the very first game, Ratchet finds a robot, one which will be soon be his best friend, which he renames “Clank” due to the sound it made when it fell. Along with his sidekick Clank, they have battled their way through various planets in different galaxies. Even though the two had some arguments on what to do, the duo always discover that saving the world is more important than any previous problem.
Ratchet uses the “Gadgetron Help Desk,” an online message system crafted to help adventurers using Gadgetron products on their way through the universe to help in his battles. However, after the fall of Gadgetron, Ratchet uses the “Megacorp Help Desk” which functions in the same manner as the previous version.
[edit] Ratchet
Ratchet is a Lombax and it the main protagonist for all Ratchet and Clank Games. He starts out just doing mechanical jobs for the adventure, but sooner rather than his life changes when he meets a small fugitive robot called Clank, from where there adventures begin. Ratchet can be known to be rather headstrong, who like people to know his opinion on things, in the first game he appears to have quite a short temper, but this seems to fade throughout the series, yet at the same time he seem to care how people look on him, which later leads to him becoming jealous of Clank's notoriety. He is shown to have a relationship with Angela Cross from Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando (Ratchet and Clank: Locked and Loaded in Europe), and was later shown to have a romantic interest in Sasha. He is voiced by Mikey Kelley in the first game and James Arnold Taylor is all other appearances. He's also voiced by Makoto Tsumura in the Japanese games.
[edit] Creation of Ratchet
Ratchet was originally thought of as a Space-Travelling Reptile Alien that can collect various weapons throughout the game by Insomniacs Vice-President of Programming Brian Hastings. His final form was decided when Incomniac at various terrestial creatures, such as rats and cats, that seemed to home a somewhat sense of agility. After numerous complaints with Ratchet's attitude in Ratchet and Clank, Insomnic changed his attitude so he came across as "less cocky less cocky, [...] much more friendly to Clank, and [...] able to handle himself better in stressful situations without being impetuous".
